Confused about light fixture wiring?
My dining room has two switches, one controls the ceiling lights and the other an outlet. Also, the foyer has a swiitch that controls the same outlet. I installed a chandelier in the ceiling thinking of using the wires that control the outlet to turn on the chandelier and leave the other switch because I wanted to keep those lights in the ceiling. I am using a single pole switch. Lights wont turn on even though there is power. I connected black hot wire to the switch and black wire coming from the chandelier to the other screw in the switch. The white coming from the chandelier with the other white in the line and the brass with the green screw which is the ground cable. So I dont know what Im doing wrong, any ideas??
It sounds like you are taking the power for the new fixture from a 3-way circuit--- flip the other switch to see if the new fixture comes on--- check the 2 switches to see what color of wire was used for what are called the travelers between the 2 switches--- the white may not be a neutral but a traveler--to power the new fixture from the 3-way switches the best way to to do it is with a 4-way switch-- instead of a single pole switch and the power for the new fixture comes from the outlet-- good luck--
