Why Is Jordan Baker described as looking contemptuous?
I dont want anyone to think I am asking you to do my homework for me, I have done my homework myself, this one question just doesnt make sense to me.
This is the scene where she is at Gatsby's party and Nick says, "I was on my way to get roaring drunk from sheer embarrassment when Jordan Baker came out of the house and stood at the head of the marble steps, leaning a little backward and looking with contemptuous interest down into the garden."
Is it because she was just standing there and looking into the garden as if she had noticed something about Gatsby that no one else noticed?

well the book is set in the 1920s and at that time there drinking was illegal and she is at a party where everyone is drinking. But i think its more to do with her character, she feels aloof from everybody, and superior. She doesn't have much of a conscience, for example when she cheats playing golf which Daisy notices, and also she drives erratically. But yeah is it when she has come out from speaking to Gatsby? Because he tells her about his past with Daisy and tries to get her to arrange a meeting between him and Daisy through Tom, so maybe she doesn't like what she's heard. She was there when Daisy was crying, hysterically drunk on her wedding day clutching Gatsby's letter.
It sounds as though she was condemning the garden and the party whilst she was simultaneously interested in it.
contempt, according to the dictionary, is the act of despising, or willful disobedience and/ or open disrespect. Jordan always seems to look at things with contemptuous interest, as she is sort of laid back and apart from things, like when Tom first met her and she was just lazing around, not interested in anything particularly.
i love that line when Tom is imagining Gatsby when he falls in love with Daisy and is kissing her for the first time, 'his mind will never romp again like the mind of god' i found that interesting description. Its completely full of contradictions, like a universe spun itself out in his brain of ineffable gaudiness (or something like that i can't remember) it wasn't even that long since i did it for my coursework, I'm sorry i can barely remember it all.
