Does auto racing contribute much to the development of commercial vehicles? And do you know of any examples of any new developments/innovations, that have come from auto racing; which have been incorporated into new generations of commercial vehicles?
At the moment not much, accept for tire development.. New intake technology, some metallurgy.. Over time, it's an entirely different story..
Almost every aspect of your modern automobile was first developed as a racing application.. From the twin overhead cam, four valve engine that won the Indy 500 in1913, to tires that can go more than a hundred miles an hour all day long.. The high silicone content aluminum engine blocks, that don't require steel sleeves for the pistons.. All of this helps reduce weight, give you better fuel mileage, that makes driving affordable, and makes your car drivable at speeds over thirty five miles, an hour.. Disk brakes, ABS anti lock braking systems, duel braking systems, and traction control all make your car safer, they came from racing (not NASCAR).. If your car monitors tire pressure for you, that comes from racing.. GM's T-400 transmission was developed in a race car, and to this day remains the only automatic transmission to compete with, and dominate cars with stick shifts.. The transmission remains almost bullet proof to this day (except for the reverse clutches, that were never really taxed, in racing applications).. This could get quite a bit longer, so I'll leave with that very short list.. In the future, when they begin racing electric cars, or whatever it is that people will be driving in the future, I'm sure that racing will play a large roll in it's development, while keeping us entertained on Saturday nights, and Sunday afternoons, and reducing the costs of driving to the public..
