Should I need to worry about this "debt"?
About 2 years ago I moved out of an apt and they sent me a bill totalling like 2000 of things they said I needed to pay for, new paint, new carpet, new dishwasher...all these things were in perfect condition when I left. I asked in an email for pictures they sent me one picture of a bag that I left behind, so I agreed "ok the 75 dollar trash fee is fine what about carpet/walls and so on, show me a picture of the damage please" I never heard back from them, I sent a few more emails and called no answers. I just checked my credit half expecting them to have sent it in and nothing and no calls from collection agencies.
Do I need to worry about them sending it in now if it's been 2 years? I expected it to go to collections and I would contest it and it never happened. Thank you for help
I would get all correspondence with them in writing; don't deal with these sleazes by phone.
I wouldn't say worry about the debt, but unfortunately, in renter situations, often the burden of proof is on the renter to prove that they didn't cause damage. What might help in this situation is if you had something when you moved in showing what condition the place was in at the time of rental (a checklist of what needs to be fixed, etc.). Also any pictures that you may have taken. In the future, always take pictures.
I would also contact the Dave Ramsey show, or at least go to his site: http://www.daveramsey.com. He has great advice on dealing with unfair debt collection practices.
I moved out of a place that did not keep up their end of the bargain, and they tried to stick me with every fee they could. They did put it on my credit report, but as a last resort, there is a place on all three major credit reports to tell your side (though that won't help your score).
ADDENDUM: after reading the other responses, and rereading yours, I noticed that you said that they had not put it in collections in two years. The other posters are right; the apt. manager most likely won't, but it doesn't mean that they can't. Sorry about my original response, I didn't read it carefully enough the first time. Hope my answer helped in some way, however.
