Recently acquired a load of used darkroom equipment and cameras of excellent quality-How do I determine value?

Have lots of stuff that I do not know how do deal with. Google is a jungle when trying to find a site for determining fair value. The photography items are the majority but antique furniture, electric, and oil lamps also-Who the heck knows?

It's not easy to say. For real, genuine antiques, there are antique dealers who specialize in such things and they have a very good idea what things will sell for. But for things like used photo equipment, values go up and down depending on what people want. For instance, 20 years ago a 20 year old camera was still very useful, but today most people do digital photography so a 20 year old film camera is wanted only for collectors value. Some old photo gear is worth a LOT just for collector's value, like old Leica cameras or Nikons or Canons.

You might call a big local antique dealer or auction house and ask if they have anyone who knows about photo equipment, or if they could refer you. Often you can e-mail pictures and descriptions and they can assess them over e-mail.

One good way is to go on EBay and look for similar items. They sell for what people are willing to pay for them, and camera collectors hang out there looking for vintage stuff.

We have a big photo swap meet at the fairgrounds here once a year, and if you walk around and look at stuff, you get the idea people pretty much know what they're worth. Some articles are obscenely overpriced, I think just in case a 'sucker' walks by. 8^)
